The photograph, taken from an elevated viewpoint, shows the surrounding area of Zschokke Street of the rising town of Highland. In the foreground of the images, a lumber yard is visible. A family of four can also be seen in the image.

The settlement of Highland, Illinois was originally founded as New Switzerland in 1831 by Swiss pioneers from Sursee, Switzerland, led by Dr Kaspar Koepfli (1774–1854). The town received its name in 1836 after the Highlands of Scotland. Zschokke Street, which has the same name today, was named after the German, later Swiss author and reformer, Johann Heinrich Daniel Zschokke (1771–1848).
