Socialist Realist Handwritten, Illustrated Political Poems and Prose of an Acrobat

A Collection of Circus-Related Socialist Realist, Illustrated, Handwritten Booklets of Poems and Prose.

Hungary: 1938–1954. Ten painted, or graphically illustrated handwritten notebooks. In different sizes and extensions. Each booklet is in very good condition. Please ask for detailed bibliographic and condition report.

A collection of ten booklets in various formats with, with Socialist Realist paintings and graphics which are accompanying the partly personal, partly political or professional poems and essays. All created, illustrated and written, by József Dindorfer (stage-name as acrobat: Remus; 1899?–1960?) between 1938 and 1954 in harmony with the contemporary Communist, anti-Capitalist, Cold War propaganda slogans.

József Dindorfer was an acrobat who owned a traveling circus, called after him the “Remus”. It could be assembled from his autobiographical and semi-autobiographical poems and proses, that he studied as a metalworker and worked in a factory near Budapest. There he became involved in the communist movement and served in the Red Army of the short-lived Hungarian Soviet Republic in 1919. In the interwar period he set up and traveled with the “Remus” circus, and after World War II he got involved in the establishment of the Soviet-style free labor union of the acrobats, even became a Stakhanovite.

The booklets are thematic and some are dedicated and made for a family member or the entire family.

Three of booklets contain mostly paintings and caricatures related to the circus, one of them only with contemporary politicians such as Chiang Kai-shek, Winston Churchill, George Marshall, Harry S. Truman or Adolf Hitler and also figures of the Hungarian politics.

Four of the booklets are dealing with political themes, adopting autobiographical or historical stories and turn them into a bigoted anti-capitalist, Communist fable, condemning the pre-Communist times or praising the Communist leaders of the Soviet Union and Hungary, Joseph Stalin and Mátyás Rákosi. The red leatherette bound notebook contains a mounted sheet with signatures of Korean, Swiss, Soviet and other participants of the first World Festival of Youth and Students which was held in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1947.

Three notebooks were created and given for a significant family member or the family. Chronologically the first was made for Dindorfer’s first wife and contains mostly naive-romantic and idyllic poems, many related to the circus-life, and the bittersweet fate of the acrobats. The second is an illustrated overview of the history and development of the circus, interpreted in accordance with the Communist ideology, with many political allusions and comments. The last booklet was made for Dindorfer’s daughter while he was in a hospital in late 1951 and it is a mixture of Communist moral tales, ideological short stories and philosophical poems of an aging, sick man.

A unique an interesting collection of personal, political and historical artifacts.
