Jan Lebenstein (1930–1999; born in Poland and lived most of his life in France), was a figurative painter who mixed surrealist style with fantastic and abstract elements. His works could be found in the major collections all over the world, among them in MoMA. He created the illustrations for the Animal Farm in 1974 and it was first published together with the text in this edition, in 1985 as a samizdat.
