Striking constructivist cover by Eriks Kalis.

Eriks Kalis (1904–1939) was a Latvian graphic designer and scenographer, member of the avant-garde Riga Artist Group. “[...] Kalis’s design for […] Vilips’s poems, 21 dzeja [21 poems], draws on the Constructivist geometry and typography favored by Lissitzky in his Berlin books and by Kassák’s own graphic programs from the early 1920s.” (Davis, 2007)

Pavils Vilips (1901–1979) was a Latvian poet, essayist, and translator. In the 1920s Vīlips was a member of the Latvian Expressionist group of writers who focused on the aspects of contemporary urban life. His present book, 21 dzeja is a remarkable example of this movement.
