Architectural Album of The Olgyay Brothers

Architects. Olgyay & Olgyay. Építészek. (Művek, Művészek. Arts and Artists in Hungary. 1 kötet – volume.]

Budapest: Budai István (Dr. Móricz Miklós nyomda), [1946]. First edition. Text in Hungarian and English. In publisher’s half cloth. Title vignette mounted on front panel. 72 p. In fine, near mint condition.

First edition of this architectural album, the oeuvre of the Olgyay brothers.

The Olgyay brothers, Victor and his identical twin brother Aladar were Hungarian-born American architects, city planners, who formalized bioclimatic or passive solar design as a discipline within the field of architecture in the 1950s. They practiced architecture as partners in the firm Olgyay & Olgyay Architects and designed residential, commercial, and exhibition structures. Victor had and academic career too and teaching at several U.S. universities, including the University of Notre Dame, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University and was an associate professor in the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at Princeton University.

This bilingual, Hungarian-English album was published soon before the Olgyay brothers left Hungary, most likely as a preparation for their career overseas, and the book has been republished in the US in 1947 with a letter of introduction by Marcel Breuer (The work of architects Olgyay + Olgyay. New York: Reinhold, 1947).
