Extremely scarce, complete collection of d’Erco’s works on the cultivation of oysters, and fish fertilising and farming.

Riccardo d’Erco’s work is an early description of oysters and their farming. Published in three, richly illustrated volumes, it summarises his extensive research on the subject, describing the various methods and equipment used around Europe and the United States. The first book comprises two parts. In its first part, d’Erco presents the fishing of oysters in Dalmatia, Trieste and the Venetian coast. The second part is his translation of Tiberius Cornelis Winkler’s (1822–1897) scarce, 1861 publication Over de oester fokkerij […] (Leyden, 1861.) that gives insight to oyster breeding in France, Denmark as well as in the United States. The second book, entirely dedicated to the cultivation of green oysters, is a translation from Jacques Marie Cyprien Victor Coste’s (1807–1873) work, Voyage d'exploration sur le littoral de la France et de l’Italie (Paris, 1861). The third book, which consists of three parts, begins with d’Erco’s account on the observations of his 1863 study trip to France and Belgium, commissioned by Friedrich Moritz von Burger (1804–1873). Subsequently, it includes the translation of two brochures by Dr Eugène Kemmerer (1815–1900) that give a detailed description of oyster farming in France. Its last part is an elaborate study on the oyster industry of the United States. It focuses on the cities of New York, Boston, New Haven, Baltimore, and the Northeast coastal States. This part is based on the French anthropologist, Paul Broca’s (1824–1880) report on his 1862 trip to the US, published in Revue Maritime Coloniale in the following year, and in a completed form in 1865.

Bound after the volumes on oysters, the present book includes another work by d’Erco, on the artificial fertilization and farming of fish, especially of salmon and trout. Comprising three parts, it is based on the Works of Karl Vogt (1817–1895) and Jacques Marie Cyprien Victor Coste.

Riccardo d’Erco (1813–1871) was a lawyer and fishing expert who did pioneering work in the development of the maritime economy in the Adriatic. After working as an interpreter for Oriental languages and secretary for the Dalmatian government in Zadar, in 1850, he was appointed the first naval supervisor for Dalmatia at the Central Maritime Administration in Trieste. In 1855, he became a supervisor at the Maritime Administration in Venice, and from 1862, he was a consultant at the Central Maritime Administration in Trieste.
