The Société française de photographie is one of the world's oldest photographic societies. It was founded in Paris, in 1854, to promote the art and science of photography, collecting related material, and organizing exhibitions.

The present publication it the catalog of the fourth exhibition of the Société, held between May 1 and July 15 in 1861. Over 150 exhibitors participated with more than 1,200 photographs. The majority of the exhibitors were French, but photographers from all over Europe (Germany, Hungary, Austria, England, Scotland, Norway, Russia, The Netherlands, Switzerland) and even from South America (Peru) participated. Just a few names: Robert Jefferson Bingham, Ludwig Angerer, Édouard Baldus, Bisson Brothers, Aimé Civiale, Leonida Caldesi, Antoine Claudet, Auguste Hippolyte Collard, Alphonse Davanne, Edmond Fierlants, Émile Garreaud, Lázár Letzter, Farnham Maxwell-Lyte, Léon-Eugène Méhédin, Nadar, Charles Nègre and Marcus Selmer.
