Berlin: S. Fischer Verlag, 1894. First edition. In publisher’s printed wrappers. 95, (1) p. Binding artistically restored. Untrimmed. Upper corner bumped. Otherwise in fine condition.

First edition of the first monograph on Edvard Munch.

The booklet was initiated, edited and co-authored by the notorious Polish intellect and outrageous writer, Stanisław Przybyszewski (1868–1927), Munch’s close friend. Przybyszewski described their friendship as a relationship in which they both considered each other as their alter ego, he even suggested that Totenmesse, his rhapsody, anticipated and inspired Munch’s world-famous painting the Scream. Przybyszewski's 1918 novel also bears the same title, Der Schrei.

Das Werk des Edvard Munch is the first monograph devoted to Munch, who at that time was appreciated by few. It comprises Przybyszewski’s foreword and article referring in particular to Munch 1893 exhibition in Berlin, where Munch presented the first version of The Scream for the first time, and three additional texts by the art critics Dr. Franz Servaes, Willy Pastor and Julius Meier-Graefe.
