Boris’ original watercolour design for the cover bound into. First Hungarian edition. Limited, numbered (1/50/600), signed copy. In publisher’s half leather with gilt title on the spine and black ribbons for closure. Upper edge gilt. (1) [original watercolour cover design bound into], (1) [colophon], (1) [illustrated title page], 29 plates. 250 × 342 mm. Small damage to the spine at the tail. Cover very slightly chipped. Overall in fine condition.

Scarce, first Hungarian edition of Gogol’s iconic short story, Diary of Madman, published as an exclusive volume of lithographs by the Hungarian graphic artist, László Boris. The present copy of the luxury edition includes Boris’ striking, original watercolour cover design.

László Boris (1897–1924) was a Hungarian illustrator, graphic artist and caricaturist. In the 1920s he worked for the German Art-Nouveau magazine, Simplicissimus.

Extremely scarce, we could trace only three copies in institutional holding, all in Hungary. WorldCat locates no copies.
