Baker’s life companion and manager, Giuseppe Pepito Abatino (1898–1936) and the Czech writer, journalist and screenwriter, Felix Achille De La Cámara (1897–1945) wrote Mon sang dans tes veines based on Baker’s eponymous novella about Joan, a young mulatto girl, who sacrifices herself for saving the life of Fred, the son of a Boston millionaire her mother works for. This narrative of self-sacrifice became a recurring motif throughout Baker's life. She “continued to develop this image as part of her humanitarian self-sacrifice in World War II [aiding the French Resistance] and in the domestic experiment with her adopted Rainbow Tribe at Les Milandes.” (Jules-Rosette, 2007. 4 p.)

The illustrator, Georges Anatolevich Pogédaieff (1894–1971) was a Russian painter and graphic artist who lived in Paris from 1925.
