In publisher’s illustrated wrappers, designed by Jiri Friml, printed in red and blue. 40 p. Cover somewhat tanned. Pages yellowed due to acidic paper. Small tear to page 37 with no effect on the print area. Overall in fine condition.

Scarce publication about the Soviet film industry with modernist cover, designed by the Czech architect and typographer Jiri Friml.

Illustrated with photographic reproductions of stills from Eisenstein’s Battleship Potemkin and Efim Dzigan’s We Are from Kronstadt, among others. The volume was published as part of the series, Monografie SSSR, a Czech monograph on the Soviet Union, of which Jiri Friml (pseud. for Karel Policansky, 1913–1996) designed all issues.

Lubomir Linhart (1906–1980) was Czech film critic and historian, photo theorist and editor. Starting his career as a spokesperson and theorist of the film and photo group of the leftist intellectual organization, the successor of Devetsil, Levá fronta, Linhart became the most influential Czech propagator of Soviet film. After working as a diplomat for a short period, Linhart pursued a successful academic career in the field of cinema.
