[Landshut]: [Johann Weißenburger], [1521]. Early edition. Papered spine. (8) p. (the last two blank). Collection number on title page in ink. Otherwise clean. In fine condition.

An early and scarce German edition of Erasmus’ diatribe on church music.

The text is a translation of an excerpt from the Annotations and circulated widely among followers of Luther and Zwingli. The treatise comments on 1 Corinthians 14:19 “Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue” (KJV). Through these words, Erasmus attacks music and chanting in the church, particularly the music practices and performances of the English Church, and advocates more preaching instead. The text was translated into German in 1521 and published by a number of printers in the same year in Nürnberg, Mainz, Augsburg, Leipzig, Basel, Erfurt, Wroclaw and in Landshut, the present edition.

Scarce, USTC locates only 5 copies worldwide.
